After an oh-fer to start Pac-12 play, the Wildcats return tonight to the comfortable confines of McKale Center.

Historically speaking, coach Dave Rubio should be happy that he’s welcoming the Oregon schools.

Rubio has had the most success against Oregon and Oregon State since replacing Rosie Wegrich as head honcho in 1992.

“Is that right?” Rubio said, smiling.

Yep. In those 21 years, Rubio’s Wildcats have a 37-7 record against Oregon State and a 33-10 mark against the Ducks. More recently, though, the Wildcats have had more success against the former than the latter.

The last time OSU defeated Arizona was back in 2009, and the last time they won in Tucson was 20 years ago. No. 21 Oregon has won four straight against the Wildcats.

“Oregon is going to give us everything we can handle,” Rubio said. “They’re really good. They play with the confidence that comes with winning a lot. They’re a team that won a lot last year and a lot of their players are coming back. We’re good, they’re good. It’s the team that’s gonna execute at the end, that’s the theme for us.”

“I don’t know as much about Oregon State,” he added, “but we’ll watch some film on them.”

The Wildcats (10-4, 0-2 Pac-12), Ducks (8-4, 1-1) and Beavers (9-4, 0-2) are the only Pac-12 schools with more than three losses thus far. Arizona lost its first two conference games to ASU and Cal.

Numbers game

Outside hitter Madi Kingdon is off to a start rivaling that of any outside hitter not only in the Pac-12, but in the country. Here’s a look at some of her impressive stats thus far, and where they rank.

4.57: kills per set (11th nationally, 2nd Pac-12).

5.51: points per set (sixth nationally, 1st Pac-12).

6: double-doubles (1st Pac-12, stat not listed nationally).

She said it

“It’s really important for that not to get at us, if you let that eat at you it’s hard to stay engaged so we just have to shake that off.” — Kingdon, about trying to bounce back from an 0-2 start to Pac-12 play.
