Pima College, bidding for a playoff spot in the first-year ever for a playoff system in the Western States Football League, will have the Tucson football calendar to itself Saturday. It plays host to Eastern Arizona at 1:30 p.m. at Kino Stadium. The Aztecs (3-3) lead the NJCAA with 17 interceptions, including a league-record nine last week. How good is that? The Pac-12 has only topped that once in history, in 1978 when UCLA intercepted 10 Cal passes. Pima’s Mikell Everette has five interceptions overall and Ironwood Ridge grad Mitch Fischer has four. Fischer is third on the team with 30 tackles. … Four of Tucson’s leading young golfers qualified for and are entered in the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School and will open play Tuesday in Maricopa. Five-time City Amateur champion David McDaniel, Web.com veteran Brian Prouty, Salpointe grad Jonathan Khan and CDO product Jake Rogers are in the 80-man, first-stage field. … Former UA All-American Ricky Barnes qualified for the 2013-14 PGA Tour with a strong finish. Barnes earned $553,000 this year, No. 132 overall. It’s not like the 2001 U.S. Amateur champion has faded from view. He has six sponsors, including those for watches, sunglasses, financial analysis, a recycling firm, golf equipment and a Lear Jet-leasing group. … Salpointe Catholic grad Mike DiMuro, who has been umpiring in the major leagues since 1999, is among the umps elevated to the postseason. DiMuro is working the Detroit-Oakland divisional playoff series. … Unbeaten (6-0) and rolling, Salpointe enters its final four regular-season games having yielded an average 6.1 points per game. Senior linebacker Jake Casteel, son of UA defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, leads the Lancers with 64 tackles, including 10 for losses. Junior linebacker Taylor Powell has 58 tackles, 12 for losses. … Three-time state championship coach Jeff Scurran of Catalina Foothills on the Lancers’ defense: “They’ve got two guys, Cameron Denson and Kaelin Deboskie, who are once-in-a-career kind of guys. They man-up on the opponent’s receiver and you don’t have to worry about them getting beat. That allows you to bring all kinds of pressure with your other nine guys.” Denson and Deboskie have combined for 66 catches, 1,244 yards and 17 TDs. And the Lancers probably have eight games remaining.
