Last week, we asked Arizona Wildcats fans to vote on which UA basketball player wore which number best. Now, it's on to football. Who is the quintessential UA football player to wear each number?

Who wore it best?

The number: 48

The showdown: Byron Evans vs. Rob Gronkowski

The comparison

Byron Evans (1983-86)

The stats: Evans' 552 career tackles trails only the great Ricky Hunley, and his 196 total tackles in 1986 is second-most, to Mark Jacobs in 1974, since the UA began tracking the stat in 1973.

The details: The South Mountain High School graduate is one of the UA's all-time greats. The linebacker's 1986 season was his best: the second-team All-American and team captain was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year.

The postscript: The fourth-round pick in the 1987 draft played middle linebacker for the Eagles for eight years. He was inducted into the UA Hall of Fame in 1992.

Rob Gronkowski (2007-08)

The stats: When he left the UA after only two active seasons, "Gronk" had 75 catches for 1,197 yards. His 10 touchdowns in 2008 were the most for any Wildcats tight end of all time.

The details: The 2007 freshman All-American had a remarkable, if brief, college career. When he left school, his 16 career touchdowns were eighth-most in UA history and the most among tight ends. His 12 catches against Oregon in 2008 is tied for the second-most in school history.

The postscript: Gronkowski missed the entire 2009 season with a back injury, but was selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Patriots. He's since become one of eight UA players to ever appear in a Pro Bowl.

The one-sentence debate: Evans' college career stands above most, but Gronkowski's post-college success makes it a close call.
