Uniform fun

For the first time in the Rich Rodriguez era, the UA wore red jerseys with white helmets and blue pants Saturday.

It’s the third different uniform combination of the season and third different colored helmet.

If you’re having trouble keeping up with all the combinations, you’re not alone. Fortunately, here’s a handy chart showing what the UA has worn its previous eight games.

Opponent Jerseys Helmets Pants Outcome

UNLV White Blue Blue Win, 58-13

NAU Blue Copper Blue Win, 35-0

Nevada Blue Red Red Win, 49-48

ASU Red Red Red Loss, 41-34

Utah White White Blue Win, 34-24

Colorado Blue White Blue Win, 56-31

UCLA White White Red Loss, 66-10

USC Red White Red Win, 39-36

By the way, UTSA coach Larry Coker tweeted this week that the Roadrunners have 54 uniform combinations. Coker’s team wore white jerseys with blue helmets and orange pants.

Where’s Jesse?

Junior quarterback Jesse Scroggins didn’t dress for Saturday’s game.

Scroggins, a transfer from USC and El Camino Community College, didn’t play in either of the first two games and is listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind B.J. Denker and Javelle Allen. Despite not playing, he did dress for the first two games, and Rodriguez said Scroggins was “still in the mix” for playing time.

But, on Saturday Scroggins was on the sideline for the game in street clothes. A UA spokesperson didn’t have an update on his status.

Freshman Anu Solomon was also in street clothes. That left Denker and Allen as the only two scholarship quarterbacks dressed out.

Nick Isham was dressed, but he’s not on scholarship.

The big number

When UTSA hit a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter, it marked the first time this season the Wildcats trailed. It was a span that lasted 124 minutes 47 seconds.

New video!

The UA was without an entrance video when it took the field for the season opener against NAU two weeks back.

It created an odd, quiet introduction on opening night.

Earlier this week, athletic director Greg Byrne promised a new video for Saturday’s game, and he’s a man of his word.

The video, with music playing, had footage of players in the locker room, preparing for the game and then went into highlights from the team’s first game against NAU.

It had some behind-the-scenes shots of the team in the tunnel and leaving the locker room, hitting a sign that says “flip the switch.”

The video ended with Rodriguez saying, “It’s time.” The players then took the field with the customary fireworks.

Overheard in the press box

“Well, he’s not calling them UTSA.” – a press member when referee Jack Wood announced a timeout for the visiting team. Wood referred to the Roadrunners as “Texas-San Antonio.” The school has asked to be called either UTSA or the Roadrunners in an attempt to brand its program.

Roster additions

The UA added a few players to its roster this week.

The most notable addition is linebacker David Wilkerson, a transfer from Cal. Wilkerson, a former four-star recruit, will redshirt this season and be eligible to play next year. The Danville, Calif., native will be a preferred walk-on and will likely have two seasons of eligibility. He was recruited by Rodriguez at Michigan.

Also added to the roster this week were walk-ons Logan Bartlett (cornerback), Arlandis Hinton (cornerback) and Abraham Mendivil (wide receiver).
