Honoring Tedy

Arizona honored 2013 National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Famer Tedy Bruschi at halftime on Saturday, bringing the two-time UA consensus All-American and former New England Patriots star back to Tucson.

Bruschi helped the Wildcats’ famed “Desert Swarm” defense lead the nation in scoring defense in 1992 and rushing defense in 1993. He finished his career with an NCAA-record-tying 52 sacks and capped off his career with a 1995 Pac-12 defensive player of the year honor.

3,000 and counting

For a moment, Ka’Deem Carey was one of just six players in Arizona history with 3,000 career rushing yards.

Then for a moment, he wasn’t one once more, as a 2-yard loss robbed him however temporarily of his glory.

But of course, there’s no keeping Carey down, and he went over the 3,000-yard mark once more with a 6-yard burst midway through the second quarter.

Carey entered the season at No. 11 on the Arizona all-time rushing list with 2,354 career yards. He needed just 5 1/2 games this year to move up to sixth on the list; he eclipsed former Arizona back Nic Grigsby (2,957).

Carey still has a shot at becoming the Wildcats’ all-time rushing yardage leader. He is less than 800 yards away from the leader Trung Canidate (3,824 career yards). Ontiwaun Carter is second on the list with 3,501 yards, followed by Art Luppino (3,371), Mike Bell (3,163) and Hubie Oliver (3,096).

Who is Adam Schulz?

Utah appeared to have pulled a fast one on the Arizona defense — although maybe with the way Travis Wilson was playing, they didn’t pull him fast enough.

Wilson exited the Utes’ last series of the first half with a hand injury. This, after two first-half interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Marquis Flowers.

In came former walk-on-turned-scholarship quarterback Adam Schulz, who had played in only two games for the Utes in his college career. Schulz played briefly against Washington State in 2012 and took some snaps in a blowout win over Weber State earlier this year.

The sophomore looked more-than-passable, though, completing both his pass attempts for a total of 17 yards and leading the Utes into field-goal range, although the kick was missed.

Wilson pick-it

Seems like the key to stifling the Utah offense is confusing Wilson.

The Utes have been hampered by Wilson’s giving ways, as they lost both previous games in which Wilson has been intercepted more than once. Wilson had three interceptions in a 51-48 overtime loss to Oregon State in Week 3 and six more picks in a 34-27 home loss to UCLA on Oct. 3.

Refresher course

The Wildcats downed Utah 34-24 last season in Salt Lake City in a rainy, sloshy matchup. Arizona piled up more than 300 rushing yards against a stout Utes defensive front, led by first-round pick Star Lotulelei.

The big number

Carey is the king of 100-yard games. It didn’t take long for him to pass the century mark Saturday: He gained 102 yards by halftime. Carey rushed for 204 yards against the Utes in 2012 in the 34-24 win.
