Douglas picked up its first win of the season Friday night behind a spectacular performance from quarterback Blaze Rose.
Rose had a hand in all five of Douglas’ touchdowns, throwing for four and running for another, as the host Bulldogs (1-5) defeated Cholla 35-14. Rose’s four scores through the air tied the Douglas school record, which was set by his father, Tony, in the 1970s.
Fernando Chacon was on the receiving end of three of Rose’s TD passes, and he finished with five catches for 133 yards. Cholla fell to 1-5 this season.
• Safford 35, Amphitheater 21: At Safford, senior quarterback Ray Holbrook threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Panthers (3-3) scored on their first two drives but were slowed by a whopping 20 penalties in the first half.
• Maricopa 37, Marana 36: At Maricopa, Marana went ahead by a touchdown with 2 minutes remaining but was unable to hold on for the victory. Running back Bradley Gonzales finished with 102 yards on the ground and scored three times.
• Walden Grove 24, Benson 14: At Benson, the host Bobcats (4-2) lost their second straight game while the Red Wolves (2-4) won for the second time in the last three games. Walden Grove hosts Santa Rita next week.
• Morenci 48, Tanque Verde 6: At Morenci, Tanque Verde (2-4) dropped its fourth straight despite managing to rush for 249 yards, 140 of which came on 25 carries by Benito Pimienta. He recorded the Hawks’ lone score on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Tanque Verde dressed just 17 players Friday night.
