Through Aug. 23, the Star will count down the top 10 football players from each major Southern Arizona high school program:

School: Rincon/University

The best: Jesse Parker

Achievements: A Parade All-American in 1972 as a senior, Parker led the Southern Division in rushing, total offense and scoring with 1,284 yards and 13 touchdowns and was named the Tucson Press Box Association Back of the Year.

The 6-foot, 185-pound running back racked up 3,049 yards and 29 scores in three years, also earning first-team All-Conference honors in 1972 and a scholarship to UCLA, where he spent a year with the Bruins before transferring to the UA.

He lettered in 1977 with the Wildcats and finished his UA career with 155 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries.

From the archives: "He's one of the most outstanding high school football players in the nation, and we consider this a great boost to our program to have him as a squad member next fall." - Arizona head coach Jim Young, in the Feb. 27, 1973 Arizona Daily Star

The big number: 1,000. Parker became the third player in Arizona high school history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back years.

Coming up: Rio Rico's top 10 players will be revealed Thursday.
