The preseason high school football All-Southern Arizona team continues today with No. 5 on our list of 22 players. Check out a video clip on KVOA (Channel 4) tonight at 6 and 10. The team was chosen by the Arizona Daily Star and the staff at KVOA and will be revealed daily through Aug. 22.
• Who he is: One of only three returning seniors, Gallion is part of a rebuilding year at Santa Rita. To label him a leftover would be wrong. His 3.8 GPA has caught the eye of Ivy League schools such as Dartmouth and Harvard. His positive attitude and consistent smile earned him the nickname "sunshine." But he was not nice to opposing offenses last year. Gallion started at defensive end and made a name for himself by halting runners in the backfield. This year, he'll try a new role, strong safety.
• Proof he's good: Gallion started on one of the best defenses in the state last year. Santa Rita advanced to the state championship game and held Glendale Cactus to 14 points, after the Cobras had averaged 58 in three playoff games. Gallion enters this season at 182 pounds, which he says is nine pounds heavier. His goal is to gain weight without losing speed, because safeties need to be quick, and he will be carrying the ball more often. Last season, Gallion carried the ball 16 times for 107 yards and a touchdown while playing mostly at fullback. But with Tamarin Jones and Chris Correa gone, Gallion's carries are expected to skyrocket.
• He said it: "I'm not the fastest guy but I can cover people. I just never really got the chance. I used to play linebacker and now I'm a strong safety, which is pretty much like an outside linebacker in the defense we'll be running."
