Amphitheater running back and linebacker Clarence Williams, left. James Gregg

The preseason high school football All-Southern Arizona team continues today with No. 7 on our list of 22 players.

Check out a video clip on KVOA (Channel 4) tonight at 5:30 and 10.

The team was chosen by the Arizona Daily Star and the staff at KVOA and will be revealed daily through Aug. 22.

Clarence Williams • LB/RB • 6-0, 210 • Amphitheater, Sr.

• Who he is: Williams is a hard worker who lives to make the big play. His best position is linebacker, though coach Vern Friedli chose Williams to be one of Amphi's numerous tailbacks last year. He also plays hoops, coming off the bench for Ben Hurley's state title-caliber basketball team. Williams says he loves how the football team is shaping up this year, especially after spending time at a camp in California in late July. Peoria Centennial and Cottonwood Mingus were there, too, among others, and the team participated in events such as passing leagues and lineman challenges. Williams doesn't have any college offers yet (he's undersized for a linebacker) but plans to use the upcoming season to raise some eyebrows, even if they aren't of the Division I variety.

• Proof he's good: At middle linebacker, he anchored a defense last season that held opponents to 14 points or less in six of the Panthers' 10 regular-season games. He will continue his defensive duties, but also could emerge as more of an offensive threat. Last season, Williams carried the ball 23 times for 96 yards and a touchdown. He was one of 10 Panthers to have at least 10 carries, and one of six to score on the ground. But then again, that's Friedli and his wishbone offense for you. Still, the majority of last year's rushers were seniors, and perhaps Williams will be asked to fill the shoes of a Gustavo Gastelum. Gastelum was Amphi's No. 1 back, accumulating 1,273 yards and 18 touchdowns on 189 carries. Regardless, Williams insists he will focus more on defense and intends to prove himself as one of the top linebackers in Southern Arizona.

• He said it: "I like to do the big stuff that our team needs, if we're down. I like to come through and make a stop on a big third down, things like that. Basically, I try to play harder than anyone out there. For Amphi to show that we're great, we have to be region champs. We shouldn't lose a game this year. That's what it will take to show that we're serious."
