Winter High School All-Stars

The preseason high school football All-Southern Arizona team continues today with No. 4 on our list of 22 players. Check out a video clip on KVOA (Channel 4) tonight at 6 and 10. The team was chosen by Arizona Daily Star and the staff at KVOA and will be revealed daily through Aug. 22.

Darrian McIver • QB/CB • 6-0, 160 • Catalina, Sr.

• Who he is: The stealth McIver knows the field from all angles. He made the shift to under center last year after spending 2008 as one of the top receiving threats for his older brother, Daniel McIver, the Trojans QB two seasons back. Darrian's transition was smooth, leading the Trojans to their first-ever playoff berth. McIver said seeing the offense as a receiver allowed him to have a more fluid grasp of routes. He will be counted on to supply the bulk of the scoring, either with his arm or his legs, after star back Ray Morales snared a college scholarship after graduation.

• Proof he's good: McIver amassed an even 1,100 yards (737 passing, 363 running) last year, finding the end zone eight times. While McIver makes for a versatile run-pass threat offensively, he is among the elite in Southern Arizona on the other side of the ball. Since his sophomore year, McIver has been a member of the Trojans defensive backfield as a shutdown corner.

• He said it: "There are bigger things coming for (Catalina). Last year was just a little taste of what I think we can do. Making the playoffs was good, 'cause it was the first time we ever did that. But now, all we want is a championship."
