The preseason high school football All-Southern Arizona team continues today with No. 18 on our list of 22 players.
Check out a video clip on KVOA (Channel 4) tonight at 6 and 10.
The team was chosen by the Arizona Daily Star and the staff at KVOA and will be revealed daily through Sunday.
Jordan Scelfo • QB • 5-10, 185 • Salpointe Catholic, Senior
• Who he is: Salpointe coach Dennis Bene believes Scelfo could emerge as one of Southern Arizona's best arms, but no one else has seen him, so it's tough to judge. What is known is that his father, Frank Scelfo, is the UA's new quarterbacks coach, and that Jordan transferred to Salpointe this year from a small 1A private school in Ruston, La. At Cedar Creek School, Scelfo was really known more for his baseball skills; the football team struggled and finished 3-8 last season. But upon his arrival in Tucson, Bene immediately loved what he saw and awarded Scelfo the Salpointe starting QB job. Not a bad gig, considering the Lancers went 9-1 last season and, led by running back Johnny Peña and future UA lineman Jacob Arzouman, figure to make a strong push this year for a state title.
• Proof he's good: Scelfo's bloodline speaks for itself. Frank played football for Northeast Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) and was named the Indians' athlete of the year in 1981. Jordan's older brother, Anthony, played football and baseball at Tulane, and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. Now, it's Jordan's turn. In baseball, he hit .409 with 11 doubles last season, while also going 8-3 on the mound with 81 strikeouts in 60 innings. Scelfo played quarterback, but without much of a supporting cast, failed to make much noise. Perhaps the huge upgrade in talent surrounding Scelfo will allow him to reach his potential as a passer. Scelfo says he's a pocket passer but can scramble, too.
• He said it: "After three years at a small school, I'm happy to get back into a big school, and I like the city living and stuff like that. I feel like I can surprise some people here. They won't know quite what to expect from me since they've never seen me before."
