Over the next 22 days, the Arizona Daily Star and KVOA (Channel 4) will showcase 22 of the best high school football players in Southern Arizona.
This preseason All-Southern Arizona football team will feature daily profiles in print and a video clip to be broadcast on KVOA at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
A different player, selected by Star and KVOA staffers, will be featured each day through Aug. 22, when the Star's high school football preview is published.
Our list begins with the 2009 Player of the Year. Ka'Deem Carey is a running back at Canyon del Oro and a future University of Arizona player. He headlines the 2010 season, which begins Aug. 26.
Ka'Deem Carey • RB • 5-10, 190 • CANYON DEL ORO, Senior
• Who he is: Just call him Ka'Dream. Carey is the highest-rated running back in Arizona - four stars according to Rivals.com. And the senior is the heavy favorite to repeat as the Southern Arizona Player of the Year for a program that has a shot at repeating as state champion. In the mix as the best running back prospect ever from Southern Arizona, Carey will be playing at the UA next year. A showcase of athleticism, he is worth the price of admission.
• Proof he's good: The nephew of former Arizona star Vance Johnson, Carey is an extremely explosive offensive threat who amassed 2,738 yards on the ground, averaged more than 12 yards per carry, and scored 43 touchdowns in his first full varsity season (he missed a chunk of 2008 with an injury and was called up late in 2007). He was also in the rotation as a defensive back, and occasionally lined up near the line to terrorize opposing quarterbacks with his speed on blitzes.
• He said it: "Last year was nice, but I still feel like there is a lot to prove. I want the Arizona fans to see what they have coming their way. I want them to see what I can do while I'm still (at Canyon del Oro), so they have something to get excited about."
• What: Day 1 - Ka'Deem Carey
• When: 6 and 10 p.m.
