The high school football season kicked off Friday night for most teams, but Tanque Verde had to wait until Saturday afternoon because of its flooded field.

One thing the Hawks didn’t wait for, however, was taking control of Mesa Sequoia.

Tanque Verde dominated from the start of the game and opened the season with a 48-6 win.

Senior running back Benito Pimienta amassed 444 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns for the Hawks. He finished with 328 rushing yards.

“I just kept running hard,” Pimienta said. “If my offensive line can keep blocking the way they did today, we’re off to big things this year.”

The Hawks’ defense forced four turnovers including an interception by junior Marcus Eibl in the first half that eventually led to a score by Pimienta and essentially put the game out of reach.
