GLENDALE - Ironwood Ridge finds itself in familiar territory after the opening round of the 5A-II boys golf state tourney at the 500 Club: in first place.

The defending state champion Nighthawks (296) lead Scottsdale Horizon by one stroke entering today's finale.

"We won state last year so it's not an uncomfortable position for us," Ironwood Ridge coach Ryan Bais said. "If it was our first time, I'd be a little bit nervous."

Scottsdale Horizon freshman Blake Cannon was the overall leader individually at 3-under-par 69. He led Ironwood Ridge's Alex McMahon and Yuma Gila Ridge's Collin Catron by one shot.

Zach Wright of Phoenix Pinnacle was at 71, and Sunnyside's Ryan Rosthenhausler and I-Ridge's Ben Esparza were tied for fifth with three others at 72.

• In 5A-I boys action at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Tucson's Derek Laporte fired a 1-over par 73 to stay within one stroke of the overall leader, Chandler Hamilton's C.J. Kim.

Salpointe Catholic was tied for third as a team, receiving rounds of 74 and 75 from stars Ricky Lee and Matt McClure.

• In the 5A-II girls tournament at Maryvale Golf Course in Phoenix, Mountain View's Kayleigh Kresse (78) was sixth, and Melissa Olson (79) was seventh.

• In 5A-I girls action at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, Salpointe Catholic totaled a 337 as a team to head into the final round in third place, trailing leader Hamilton by 51.
