There are two types of players on the PGA Tour.
Those who enjoy match play competition and those who don’t. But, as Sergio Garcia recently pointed out, the golfers who don’t like it are usually the ones who don’t qualify for this week’s WGC Accenture Match Play Championship.
“I think the guys that go, they probably do (like match play),” said Garcia, laughing, at this weekend’s Northern Trust Open. “It’s nice to play match play here and there. We don’t get to play it too often throughout the year.”
But match play is the name of the game this week for the PGA’s best. Competition at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain begins Wednesday, with practice rounds set for today and Tuesday.
Several golfers began trickling into Tucson this weekend in preparation for the event.
Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen was at Hi Corbett Field on Sunday, filming a segment for the TV show “European Tour Weekly.” Olesen competed against the Wildcats’ Johnny Field and James Farris in a baseball versus golf accuracy competition, with the 23-year-old Dane winning.
Others, including the world’s No. 1 Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, got some work in at the driving range at Dove Mountain on Sunday.
While the rest of the field makes its way to Southern Arizona, find three things we’re watching this week in Monday's Arizona Daily Star.
