Mountain View's softball team entered Wednesday, the final day of the regular season, as the No. 26 team in Division I and riding a three-game losing streak.

That skid is over, and the Mountain Lions are hoping their season isn't.

The Mountain Lions (14-11) beat Rincon/University 19-2 in five innings and now can only hope that can move them into the top 24 and give them a spot in the state tournament.

Baseball and softball teams will find out this afternoon where they'll be playing when the state tournament begins Saturday.

It's more of an if in Mountain View's case, for now. Senior Shayna Adelstein gave up five hits, struck out five and allowed no walks over five innings for the Mountain Lions. Nicki Carpenter hit a grand slam, and Justyne Coffey hit a three-run home run, both within the first two innings.

• Desert Christian 15, Pusch Ridge Christian 8: At Pusch Ridge, senior captain Sarah Chavez threw seven innings and struck out five for the win. Chavez also tripled. Sophomore Courtney Tyra doubled and tripled as the Eagles, who entered the game ranked No. 22, likely locked up a spot in the Division IV state tournament.

Pusch Ridge sophomore Maddie Dowdle tripled twice, but the Lions will likely miss the state tournament. Pusch Ridge was No. 25 entering the game.

• Salpointe Catholic 7, Sahuaro 5: At Salpointe, senior Emily Griffin came on in relief in the third inning and worked four innings with three strikeouts. She gave up two hits and may have moved the 17th-ranked Lancers in position to host a first-round game in the Division II state tournament Saturday.

Sahuaro junior Hannah Gradillas doubled and homered. The sixth-ranked Cougars still appear to be in line for a first-round bye.

• Sierra Vista Buena 9, Mesa Dobson 3: At Buena, junior Cindy Chon threw a complete game with four strikeouts, Buena hit three home runs in the third inning, highlighted by junior Salana Thomas' grand slam as the No. 21 Colts likely secured a Division I playoff berth.

• Sahuaro 9, Salpointe Catholic 1: At Salpointe, junior Alex Verdugo led the Cougars to victory, striking out 12 batters over six innings. Verdugo also added a long home run, and fellow junior Winston Welch hit two doubles as the Cougars likely eliminated the Lancers from qualifying for the Division II state tournament. Salpointe went 3-7 over its last 10 games and was ranked 28th on Wednesday.

• Empire 6, Benson 1: At Benson, senior Ryan Stewart pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11, and junior Brenden Thaggard doubled twice as the No. 15 Ravens likely locked up a first-round home game in Division III.

• Mountain View 9, Rincon/University 7: At Rincon, the 22nd -ranked Mountain Lions snapped a five-game skid and appear to be one of the last teams to make the Division I state tournament.
