Palo Verde's Carlos Bermudez began his quest for a third straight state championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Harpreet Singh from El Mirage Dysart in the second round of the Division II state tournament Saturday morning.

Bermudez, the No. 1 seed in the 128-person bracket, had a bye in the first round.

The Palo Verde senior wasn't the only seeded player from Southern Arizona to advance at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

Catalina Foothills' Wade Heerboth, the No. 4 seed, also won 6-0, 6-0, beating Christopher Carsey from Flagstaff High School. Heerboth's teammate, Dan Rapcsak (unseeded), also advanced, beating Garrett McLaren from Prescott 6-0, 6-1.

Ironwood Ridge had a strong showing in Division II play. Alec and Cody Petford, the No. 2 doubles team, easily advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 win. The Nighthawks' other doubles team of Josh Taylor and Conor Spiegel also prevailed.

Singles player Alex Bose of I-Ridge moved on with a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Soto from Nogales.

In Division I action at Indian School Park in Phoenix, No. 5 seed Matt Dunn of Salpointe Catholic advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win. His teammate, Brandon Gerber, also moved on with a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Rincon/University's Neeko Gardner was the only Ranger to make it to the third round with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rodrigo Carmona from Phoenix Camelback. Sierra Vista Buena advanced two players in Gustavo Ruffo and Chris Young.

Salpointe Catholic's doubles team of Andrew Dunn and Tyler Linscott, seeded fifth, advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

The Lancers also had a big day on the girls side at the Gene Autry Tennis Center in Mesa.

Courtney Amos, the top-seeded player in the Division I draw, beat Ava Egan from Gilbert Highland 6-0, 6-0. Her cousin, Lauren Amos, seeded fourth, also won 6-0, 6-0, beating Sheridan Pearson from Phoenix Pinnacle.

Salpointe's third-seeded doubles team of Maeve McGeorge and Claire Baxter advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

At the Division II level, the No. 1 seeded doubles team of Marissa Baca and Katrina Domingo from Ironwood Ridge advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

The No. 2 seeded team in D-II also comes from Southern Arizona. Catalina Foothills' Zaina Sufi and Samantha Ruth moved on 6-0, 6-0.

Ironwood Ridge's other doubles team of Alex Prassas and Emma Bose advanced with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

In singles play, Catalina Foothills' Rachanna Bhat, the No. 2 seed, defeated Katie Fort from Sahuarita 6-0, 6-0.

No. 8 seed Cristina Oropeza from Nogales also advanced, easily beating Amanda Coldren from Ironwood Ridge 6-0, 6-0.

The individual state tournament resumes April 29 in the Valley with third-round matches.
