At Foothills, on senior night, it was only fitting that coach Jeff Scurran gave senior running back Ty Cruz the ball on third-and-goal from the 1, in overtime . Cruz scurried across the line for the go-ahead score, which likely locked up a Division III playoff berth for the Falcons (8-2), who went 0-10 a year ago.

• Highlight reel: In the second quarter, freshman QB Rhett Rodriguez, the son of UA football coach Rich Rodriguez, found Cruz deep down the left side of the field for the 49-yard touchdown.

  • Player of the game:
  • Rodriguez finished the night with 139 yards and a touchdown on 8-of-12 passing.
  • By the numbers:
  • 17 and 6.
  • Despite losing the first-down battle 17-6, the Falcons were able to pull out the win.
  • He said it:
  • “I knew everyone would do their job. All I had to do was do my job, and my teammates would help me.” — Rodriguez
