Some consider this year’s senior class for football the best Southern Arizona has ever seen.

There are a dozen reasons why.

Twelve Southern Arizona football players are to sign national letters of intent to four-year schools today, marking one of the biggest recruiting hauls in recent local history. It’s not just who is signing but where they’re going: Eight of the 12 are signing with Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Div. I-A) schools.

The latest commit in the group is Sabino three-star offensive lineman Andrew Mike, who announced Tuesday that he will sign with Florida. Mike verbally committed to Vanderbilt 24 hours earlier before changing his mind.

“They put the full-court press on him in the last 24 hours,” Sabino coach Jay Campos said Tuesday night. “He was a little bummed out to tell the Vanderbilt coaches, but they understood. He’s very excited and is sure he made the right decision.”

Campos said this class is the deepest in Tucson since he became coach is 2003. Along with Mike, he will have two other players signing to play for FBS schools this afternoon.

Salpointe Catholic football coach Dennis Bene leads the pack with four players signing to play for major colleges. He echoed Campos in saying this is one of the best classes.

“It’s really fantastic,” Bene said. “It speaks to the quality of the players in Southern Arizona.”
