With October right around the corner, the thought of the state playoffs is sure to be in the air this Friday night, the halfway point of the high school football season.

That will especially hold true at Salpointe Catholic.

UA verbal commit Cameron Denson and the Lancers (4-0) will host Tempe Marcos de Niza at 7 p.m. Friday in one of the biggest games statewide. The two undefeated Division II powers will clash live on Cox channel 7.

Salpointe, which has looked flawless on both sides of the ball, will be coming off a bye week following a tremendous start to the season, which included wins over Nevada and California powers on the road.

The game could be a preview of the Division II state final later this year and is can’t-miss affair. However, here are three more events to catch this week around Southern Arizona:

Tuesday

Girls volleyball: Rincon/University senior Taylor Reiter and the rest of the Rangers will go for their fifth straight win Tuesday when they host Marana at 6:30 p.m.

Rincon (10-2) has only dropped two sets in its current winning streak since losing in straight sets at Ironwood Ridge on Sept. 10.

The Rangers are undefeated at home and finished third in the TUSD Invitational this month. Meanwhile, Marana finished third in the Flowing Wells Invitational two weeks ago and has won two of its last three matches.

Wednesday

Boys golf: The last time Salpointe Catholic and Ironwood Ridge met, the host Lancers came out with a two-stroke (147-149) win at Randolph North to open the season.

Junior Kenyon Kautz and the Nighthawks will try get some revenge when they host Salpointe at La Paloma at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Kautz had a 1-under 35 in the first meeting with Salpointe to lead I-Ridge, while Lancers freshman Trevor Werbylo had a 2-under 34, the best score of the afternoon.

Friday

Football: Santa Rita and Rio Rico were undefeated heading into their games last Friday, but both ended up suffering their first losses.

The Hawks (3-1) host the Eagles (3-1) in a Division IV sectional game and only one of them will be able to rebound their from loss and move closer to a potential playoff berth.

DeQuaven Brooks has been Santa Rita’s star, catching 18 passes for 419 yards and five scores. Rio Rico senior John Brewington has stepped up at running back to fill in for the injured Aaron Fanning, who is slowly getting back to 100 percent.
