Since losing a close season opener to Sahuaro, the Tucson High football team has responded with a lot of offense and blown out its last two opponents.

Meanwhile, Sunnyside won its first two games but became the latest victim of Salpointe Catholic last week in a 46-0 loss.

After struggling to stop the Lancers’ high-powered offense, this week won’t be any easier for the Blue Devils. Tucson has posted a combined 119 points in its last two games and will travel to Sunnyside on Friday at 7 p.m., for a pivotal game as the Blue Devils try to get back on the winning track.

While that is one game to catch this week, here’s a look at three other events going on around town:

Girls volleyball: Ironwood Ridge will try to stay perfect against local teams this year when it hosts Sahuaro at 6:30 p.m.

The Nighthawks (8-2) will also host Glendale Ironwood on Tuesday but should have a tough test against the Cougars, who finished fourth at the TUSD Invitational earlier this month and have won two straight games.

I-Ridge went 9-2 at home last year and has historically been a tough place for Southern Arizona opponents. The match will be the last tuneup for the Nighthawks before they head to the Westwood Tournament of Champions this weekend.

Football: Cienega edged out a late win against Catalina Foothills last week for its first victory of the season. The Bobcats (1-2) will try to keep rolling at 7 p.m. when they host Canyon del Oro, which is coming off its first loss of the season.

This will be the first meeting between Cienega’s Nemer Hassey and CDO’s Dusty Peace since they faced off in the unforgettable 2010 4A-I state semifinal game when Ka’Deem Carey rushed for two scores in the final 2:17 of the game to lift the Dorados to a 28-24 win.

While the two teams are completely different, this game has all the ingredients to be fun to watch.

Cross country: Nineteen high school teams are signed up for Saturday morning’s Old Pueblo Invitational, hosted by St. Augustine Catholic.

This meet is one of a kind because of how the races are broken up: by grade and gender. The event will be held at Lincoln Park, next to Santa Rita High. The action will begin at 8 a.m. with the freshman girls, and races will start every 15 minutes after. The senior girls run at 9:30 and the senior boys take off at 9:45. Teams have until Wednesday to enter.
