The Star will rank the top seven football teams in Southern Arizona each week throughout the season. Here is our pre-season power poll.

  • Salpointe Catholic

The defending state champion Lancers lost a lot but also return a strong defensive corps, led by middle linebacker Taylor Powell, and haven't lost to a local team since 2008.

  • Ironwood Ridge

Two years removed from a state title, coach Matt Johnson has a strong group coming back and will likely be playing deep into November.

  • Cienega

With coach Nemer Hassey hoping to go out on a good note and star quarterback Adriell Alvarado poised for a big year, Cienega will be tough to beat.

  • Sabino

Although star players Matt Bushman and Andrew Mike are gone, Sabino will still be strong and should qualify to the playoffs for the 13th straight season.

  • Sahuaro

The Cougars are coming off their most wins in a season since 1999, the last time they won a postseason game.

  • Canyon del Oro

The Dorados return plenty of talent from last year's squad that was minutes away from being in the Division III state semifinals.

  • Mountain View

As long as several transfers, including UA verbal commit Demetrius Flannigan, are eligible to play, the Mountain Lions could make a case to be the best in Southern Arizona.
