The Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas will surely be the main attraction this week but there will also be plenty of tournament action to watch around Southern Arizona.

The Santa Rita and Empire baseball teams are pairing up to host the annual Dan Moore Classic while Tucson High’s softball team will be putting on the Badger Invitational at Cherry Field. Both tournaments start Wednesday and run through Saturday.

Those aren’t the only things going on, however. Here’s a look at four things to watch this week:

Boys volleyball: Sahuaro beat Catalina Foothills in bracket play of the TUSD Invitational on Saturday before going on to win the 16-team tournament for the second time in three seasons. The Cougars, who beat Cienega 2-0 in the championship match, will return to the court Tuesday when they host Foothills in their home opener at 6 p.m. The Falcons, coached by David Thistle, won the TUSD Invitational last season and host Cienega on Thursday night. Foothills will also host a tournament beginning Friday.

Track and field: Sierra Vista Buena had a strong showing at the Douglas-hosted Ted James Invitational on Saturday, with its boys team winning and the girls team finishing second behind Salpointe Catholic, the two-time defending Division II state champion. The Colts will next travel to Walden Grove for a four-team meet on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Buena senior Ben Sims, who finished third in the boys Division I triple jump last spring, won both the triple and long jumps and anchored the Colts’ 400-meter relay team to a win Saturday.

Baseball: Desert Christian, last year’s Division IV state champion, made it to the semifinals of Amphitheater’s Panther Invitational last week before losing to the eventual winner, El Paso Eastwood. Now the Eagles will turn their attention to the 16-team Dan Moore Classic.

Desert Christian will play Catalina on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Santa Rita to help kick off the event that runs through Saturday evening. Marana will face Palo Verde at the same time on Wednesday at Empire in the other opener.

Softball: There are 16 teams signed up for Tucson High’s Badger Invitational this week. Play begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday and runs through Saturday evening.

Desert View, which reached the final of the tournament last year, will face Catalina Foothills in one of two games to kick things off at Cherry Field. Pueblo will play Sunnyside in the other game. Marana, which won the event last year, will play Empire at 6 p.m. while the host Badgers will face St. David at 8 p.m. to close out the first day.
