This was a very simple choice. Alyssa Thompson capped off a stellar career at Salpointe winning four state titles as a senior.
While her performance at the Division II state meet was obviously the highlight of her season, she proved to be the top girls track and field athlete in Southern Arizona all year long by dominating the hurdling and jumping events.
Thompson, who will do the heptathlon at Wake Forest next year, had the best overall time in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet (42.55 seconds) and the top overall mark in the triple jump at 39 feet, 7 inches. She also had the second best distance in the long jump (19-3) and fourth best time in the 100 hurdles (14.78).
The highlight of the regular season came when Thompson won three individual titles at the UA-hosted Willie Williams Classic in March and set the Drachman Stadium record in the 300 hurdles that had been standing since 1985.
