Arizona State beat Arizona for the 12th straight time Saturday night at Tucson Convention Center, handing the Icecats their third loss in a row, 8-2.

The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the first period before Arizona's Blake Richards scored seven minutes later. Freshman Brian Slugocki and junior Geordy Weed had assists.

Arizona (8-7) failed to score again until late in the third period. In the meantime, ASU continued to score.

Dave Jantzie scored with 48 seconds left in the first period to give the Sun Devils a 3-1 lead at the break. They extended their lead when Joe Schweiger found the net 8:55 into the second period and then made it 5-1 when Jantzie scored another goal four minutes later.

ASU (11-3-2) was quiet for most of the third period until it scored two goals 11 minutes in and took a 7-1 lead.

The Icecats ended their drought when Richards, a junior, scored on a pass from freshman Andrew Murmes with 1:48 left in the game.

ASU answered 38 seconds later when Colin Hekle scored the game's final goal.

Goaltender David Herman had a rough night in front of the net. He registered 28 saves but said the eight goals he gave up made that meaningless.

"I need to come up with some more saves," Herman said. "I probably played one of my worst games of the season. I had some good saves, but those good saves don't mean anything when you give up eight against ASU."

Arizona associate coach Dave Dougall said the Icecats had trouble executing their plays, and that ASU was able to control the game. The Icecats totaled 34 shots in the loss.

"We weren't able to bury any of our shots," Dougall said. "We were getting shots, but they weren't high-quality shots. A lot were going wide or right into the body of their goaltender."

Dougall added that the entire second half of the season remains and that the team isn't about to give up.

Coach Leo Golembiewski said the UA had had only five practices since its last game Nov. 20.

"It's definitely an issue, but it's not an excuse," he said. "Execution is the key, and you're going to execute less if you don't have a chance to skate and shoot as much as everybody else does."

The Icecats next game will be at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 7 when they host Adrian College (17-3-1) at TCC.
