  • UA baseball coach Andy Lopez had his contract extended by the Arizona Board of Regents last week, giving him a base salary of $160,000 with the possibility he could earn more than $200,000. The salary structure of Pac-12 baseball coaches was absolutely fractured in recent years when Oregon paid George Horton $635,000 and Oregon State kept Pat Casey from going to Notre Dame by raising his base package to $293,000.
  • In recent months, USC tried to woo UCLA national championship coach John Savage by offering a reported $1 million annually. Los Angeles newspapers have reported that Savage chose to stay at UCLA for about $600,000. Funny money, isn’t it?
  • UA athletic director Greg Byrne is now signed through 2016 at $440,000 a year, with a $500,000 retention bonus due Sept. 30, 2016. Much like Lopez’s deal, that’s under the new market rate for elite-class AD’s. A few weeks ago, Byrne answered a rumor that he was about to leave Arizona by saying “why, did I resign?” That’s the question of the day. The next time a top BCS school has a vacancy at athletic director, Byrne is sure to be one of those on their must-call list.
  • In the late 1940s, Lee Carey was the leading young baseball player in Arizona, a prospect of note at Tucson High, leading the Badgers to three state championships. Carey was in the starting lineup for the Class C Tucson Cowboys at 18 and soon at Class AA with Oklahoma City, at 21. He ultimately played 652 minor-league games before returning to Tucson whereupon he became a teacher and coach in the TUSD, piloting the Rincon Rangers to the 1962 state championship. Now, overdue, Carey will be inducted into the Rincon Rangers Foundation Hall of Fame on Saturday morning at Tucson Country Club. Well deserved.
