Flowing Wells High School graduate Tara Erdmann finished third Thursday night in the 10,000 meters at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Erdmann battled for second place for much of the race with Jordan Hasay and Amy Hastings, but the three were nowhere near Shalane Flanagan, who ran away from the pack early and never looked back. She won in 31 minutes 43.20 seconds. Hasay was second in 32:17.34, and Erdmann finished in 32:24.16.

Jen Bergman, a new UA alumnus, was eighth in the 10K, finishing in 33:34.15.

Erdmann, who graduated from Flowing Wells in 2007, moved on to Loyola Marymount and then the Nike Oregon Project. She finished sixth in the 10,000 last year at the U.S. Olympic trials.

UA’s Shapri Romero, a senior-to-be, competed in the 400 meters and finished sixth in her heat with a time of 53.20 seconds. Only the top four in each heat advance.

Two with ties to the UA will compete Friday. Georganne Moline, now an alum, will run in the first round of the 400 hurdles. UA volunteer assistant coach LaTisha Holden will take on the 100 hurdles.
