While the NCAA tournament comes to an end tonight, the fun in high school sports is only getting started.

With state tournaments just a few weeks away, it's crunch time for some teams, while others can begin positioning themselves for their playoff runs.

This week includes several big matchups and a bit of "Friday Night Lights." Here's a look at what to watch around town:

Tuesday

• Baseball: Nogales will travel to Rincon/University at 4 p.m. as it tries to bounce back from being upset at home by Pueblo on Friday.

The Apaches, ranked 18th in Division II, snapped a five-game winning streak with the 3-1 loss, which was their first at home this year. Meanwhile, the Rangers are coming off an 8-4 upset win over Sunnyside, which is ranked 12th in Division I.

Two days after facing Rincon, Nogales will have its chance at revenge against the Warriors when it travels to Pueblo at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wednesday

• Boys volleyball: No. 8-ranked Rincon/University hosts Sahuaro at 6 p.m. as the Rangers try to stay undefeated at home and improve their chances of earning a first-round bye in the Division I state tournament.

Rincon has won three straight regular-season matches, and the Rangers beat the Cougars in four sets in their last meeting at Sahuaro on March 19.

The Cougars are ranked 18th and have swept their last two opponents. A win would be a huge boost to the team's playoff hopes.

Friday

• Track and field: The nighttime Sabino Distance Classic will make it feel like football season, even though that's months away.

The specialty state-qualifying meet starts at 6 p.m. at Sabino's track and features only distance events: the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and the 3,200 relay.

It also includes the Kristin Yoder 5K Memorial Run, which is open to anyone.

As of Friday, there were 15 teams entered, according to Sabino athletic director Bill Taylor. He said teams have until today to sign up.
