Tennis might take center stage Saturday when it crowns the first state champions of the season, but it surely isn't the only thing going on.
The tennis team tournament kicks off Tuesday and Wednesday, the same day the baseball and softball seasons come to an end.
This week also features one final local track and field qualifying meet. Here's a look at what to watch:
Baseball: Douglas, Sahuarita and Salpointe Catholic will be battling it out for the last few tournament spots in Division II.
The Bulldogs are No. 24 and hold the last spot heading into today's home game against Willcox. They also host Benson on Tuesday.
No. 26 Sahuarita travels to Flowing Wells today and hosts Marana on Tuesday to close out the season while No. 27 Salpointe travels to Canyon del Oro today and hosts Sahuaro on Tuesday for its finale.
All those games are must-win if those three teams want to be playing Saturday when the state tournament opens.
Track and field: Twenty teams from all four divisions are already entered into the Sabino Invitational which starts at 2 p.m. on Friday. Teams have until Tuesday to enter.
This is the time of the year when athletes want to be peaking, and this is one of the last meets to shake off the rust before the big stage of state at Mesa Community College in less than three weeks.
Tennis: Several locals advanced to Friday's quarterfinals and if they win again there, they'll be playing in the semifinals on Saturday morning at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
Ironwood Ridge's Alex Bose in singles along with Adam Knox and Cody Petford in doubles are the No. 1 seeds in Division II and still alive. Salpointe Catholic's Andrew Dunn and Tyler Linscott are the No. 1 boys doubles team in Division I.
On the girls' side, I-Ridge's Sara Brown in singles and Catalina Foothills sisters Rachana and Kirtana Bhat in doubles are the top seeds. Pusch Ridge Christian's Allie Scott and Gabrielle Courtney are the No. 1 seed in Division III doubles.
