Six seniors from third-seeded Catalina Foothills are hoping to end their careers with four state championships when the playoffs start today.

"Its an accomplishment that can only be equaled," said Foothills girls coach Charlie Kendrick. "They set a goal at the beginning of the season to win a state championship and now we are four games away from it."

One of those seniors is goalkeeper Laura DeMers, who has 56 saves and averages close to three saves a game.

The Falcons host Queen Creek at 7 p.m. today in the first round. If they were to reach the state championship game, it won't be easy.

"Our division this year is very competitive, so it's going to be no easy road," Kendrick said.

Here's a look at four other teams to watch in both the boys and girls state tournaments:

No. 1 Sahuaro girls, Division II

At home vs. No. 16 Peoria Liberty, today 7 p.m.

• Record: 14-7-1

• Biggest win: The Cougars played Catalina Foothills four times and finally came away with a 1-0 win against the Falcons on Jan. 22, which helped them earn the top seed.

• Golden nugget: Sophomore midfielder Allison Raniere leads Sahuaro with 19 assists, helping set up teammates such as Holly Howe and Jasmine Simmons.

No. 4 Salpointe Catholic boys, Division II

At home vs. No. 13 Bullhead City Mohave, Wednesday 7 p.m.

• Record: 22-2

• Biggest win: A week after losing to Catalina Foothills in the finals of the Brandon Bean championship, the Lancers answered back with a 3-0 win at Foothills on Dec. 3. The Falcons are the only other Southern Arizona team in the Division II state tournament.

• Golden nugget: Of the 104 goals Salpointe has scored this season, senior T.J. Hope has accounted for 25 of them.

No. 2 Palo Verde girls, Division III

At home vs. No. 15 Gilbert Higley, today 7 p.m.

• Record: 16-1

• Biggest win: In the Palo Verde Invitational, the Titans claimed the tournament championship with a 2-0 win over Marana.

• Golden nugget: Jasmine Stokes, one of the top scorers in the state, leads an offensive attack that has scored 82 goals this season and hopes to return to the state finals.

No. 14 Rincon/University boys, Division I

At No. 3 Phoenix Desert Vista, Wednesday 7 p.m.

• Record: 14-5-1

• Biggest win: The Rangers took down Douglas, the No. 2 team in Division III, in a 5-1 win in the Chris Maier Invitational on Dec. 14.

• Golden nugget: Junior goalkeeper Devin Henderson saved 131 shots and averaged close to seven a game for Rincon.
