Mike Candrea stood three feet from the base in question, and knows what he saw during the Arizona Wildcats' 5-4 win against Stanford.

With runners on second and third and one out in the fourth inning Sunday, Stacie Chambers roped a line drive to center field that was caught by Stanford's Sarah Hassman, who dove headfirst.

Brittany Lastrapes tagged up and scored, giving the UA a 5-4 lead.

For about two seconds.

The No. 10 Cardinal appealed, stepping on third base. Home plate umpire Dale Wilson ruled Lastrapes had left early.

She was out. The inning was over.

The game was tied again.

"I knew damn well that he missed that call," Candrea said. "He missed it big-time."

Candrea sprinted from his spot as the third base coach, going nose-to-nose with Wilson for almost 30 seconds before he was ejected.

"There were a couple magic words that he didn't agree with," Candrea said. "At that point, enough was enough. We needed to get fired up a little bit, too. Not that it helped.

"It helped me feel better."

The No. 3 Wildcats (35-7, 5-4 Pac-10) were riled up. Lini Koria led off the next inning with a towering home run over the batter's eye in center field for the deciding score.

"That gets my blood going," shortstop K'Lee Arredondo said. "For anyone to kick out coach Candrea, he's rarely ever wrong. He's the best coach in the world.

"To really argue with him, you're just asking for a bruising."

Candrea was escorted off the field and stood behind a 3-foot chain-link fence in the UA bullpen down the left field line.

He seethed - but did manage to sign a few autographs.

"One was a little girl that got hit by a fly ball," he said sheepishly.

Tasked with throwing four innings, No. 2 starter Sarah Akamine lasted only 2 1/3. Jenna Rich hit a two-run homer in the third to give Stanford a 3-0 lead.

Akamine walked the next batter on four pitches, and Candrea had seen enough. He removed her in favor of Kenzie Fowler.

Candrea said "there's a different mindset right now" when Akamine pitches, as opposed to Fowler.

"She needs to battle through it right now," he said. "She's not pitching with a lot of confidence."

The move seemed to awaken the Wildcats in front of 2,501 fans.

Lauren Schutzler started the bottom of the third by reaching on an Ashley Han-sen error, and Arredondo singled up the middle. Chambers then rocketed a home run, her third in two games, off the netting that protects the scoreboard in right field, tying the game at 3.

The next batter, Brigette Del Ponte, took aim at the same spot, landing a homer over the right-center field wall for the lead.

The second home run chased Rich, the pitcher, who was moved to shortstop, in favor of Ashley Chinn. Chinn allowed one run - the Koria homer - in the final four innings.

Fowler allowed five hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings for her 24th win, sealing a three-game sweep against the Cardinal (30-9, 4-5).

Candrea said he needs Akamine to improve; he doesn't want teams the UA might see in the postseason to be able to get three days' worth of information on Fowler.

"I don't feel like I can throw Kenzie out there every day the rest of the year and keep her strong," he said.
