Olympian: Mike Candrea

Olympics: 2004, Athens; and 2008, Beijing

Local connection: Eight-time national champion UA softball coach

Feat: In addition to coaching the U.S. women’s softball team to a gold medal in 2004 and a silver medal in 2008, Candrea has won eight NCAA softball championships in his 27 years at the UA. He was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year in 2004 after his squad went a perfect 9-0 and outscored its opponents 51-1. He has been the National Coach of the Year four times, and the UA has been to the Women’s College World Series 22 times in his tenure.

Current: The 10-time Pacific-10 coach of the year is still with the Wildcats and is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. This past season, Candrea became the fastest coach to reach 1,300 wins to keep him on track to be the winningest coach of all time.
