Estela Piñon found a way to slow the Washington offense Sunday to help the No. 9-ranked Wildcats avoid a three-game sweep in Seattle.
Piñon threw a two-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader as Arizona (40-11, 13-8 Pac-12) won 2-0. Piñon (15-5) walked five and struck out two.
No. 11 Washington (30-13, 10-9) won Friday’s game 11-7 and then took the first game of the doubleheader 8-0.
Rain washed out Saturday’s game.
Kelsey Rodriguez gave UA the only offense it needed in its win, hitting a two-run homer in the third inning. Her fifth long ball of the year scored Chelsea Suitos, who went 2 for 3 and stole a base.
In the first game Sunday, the Huskies scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth in the five-inning mercy-rule win. UW scored three runs off starting pitcher Kenzie Fowler, then roughed up Shelby Babcock for the final five.
The Wildcats open a three-game home series against No. 6 Oregon at 5 p.m. Thursday.
