The No. 10-ranked Arizona Wildcats softball team won its first two games on the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational, beating both Longwood and Valparaiso in five innings Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Arizona started the tournament with four runs on five hits in the first inning against Longwood and cruised to an 8-0 victory. Estela Piñon (3-1) picked up the win and gave up one hit over four innings, striking out four and walking two. Chelsea Goodacre led the Cats at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a homer and four RBIs.

In the second game, Arizona scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-1 victory over Valparaiso.

Although rain is predicted today, Arizona is scheduled to play Texas-Arlington at 4 p.m. and Iowa at 6 p.m.

In other games Friday, Longwood scored two runs in the first and third innings to beat Texas-Arlington 4-3, Indiana won its second game of the season by defeating Texas-Arlington 8-5, and Iowa shut out Valparaiso 8-0.

Today’s other scheduled games: Longwood vs. Indiana, 9 a.m.; Valparaiso vs. Longwood, 1 p.m.; Texas-Arlington vs. Iowa, 8 p.m.
