No. 22 Desert Christian defeated No. 11 Chandler Valley Christian 9-2 in a Division IV state tournament game Thursday behind the arm and bat of senior captain Sarah Chavez.

Chavez threw a complete game and fanned seven batters in the first-round game at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.

Chavez finished 4 for 4 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Sophomore Lauren Radtke was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while junior Lexis Rorrer drove in three runs in the fifth inning with a double.

Desert Christian plays No. 6 Phoenix Christian in the second round at Rose Mofford at 4 p.m. today.

• No. 17 Tempe Prep 4, No. 16 San Miguel 1: At Rose Mofford, the Vipers fell to Tempe Prep.

San Miguel senior pitcher Elissa Montiel threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts.

Tempe Prep scored two runs in the second inning on an error.

San Miguel got its lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from senior Carlisa Galarda.

The Vipers stranded two runners in each of the final two innings.
