EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Brek Shea scored his first international goal off a feed from Landon Donovan in the 82nd minute Tuesday night to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica and the top spot in its Gold Cup group.

Seconds after Sean Johnson made a brilliant save off a corner kick, Joe Corona cleared the ball, setting up the winning sequence.

Donovan, trying to work his way back into a starring role on the national team after a self-imposed hiatus, took the ball on the right side. He quickly spotted Shea streaking down the middle.

Donovan's pass hit Shea in stride; Shea sent a left-footed shot from 15 yards off goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton for the winner, the Americans' eighth straight, a team record.

They will play El Salvador on Sunday in Baltimore.

Sprinter Powell under investigation

ROME - Former 100-meter world-record holder Asafa Powell, Jamaican teammate Sherone Simpson and their trainer were formally placed under criminal investigation for violating Italy's doping laws, police said Tuesday.

The move came a day after Italian police confiscated unidentified substances in a raid on the hotel where the three were staying, following the athletes' positive tests for banned stimulants.


Phoenix radio station to air UA games

The Arizona Wildcats have a new radio home in Phoenix. Fox Sports 910-AM will air all football and basketball games for the 2013-2014 school year, the school announced Tuesday. All weekly football and men's basketball coaches shows featuring Rich Rodriguez and Sean Miller will also be carried by the station.

UA games were previously broadcast in Phoenix on KFNX 1100-AM, a news and talk radio station.

"We have been focused on continuing to grow our presence in Maricopa County and this is a significant agreement that once again shows the tremendous passion and pride that all University of Arizona fans have throughout the great state," UA athletic director Greg Byrne said in a news release.

• Former ASU basketball player Eddie House will have his jersey honored at Wells Fargo Arena this season. ASU coach Herb Sendek made the announcement Tuesday at at the Weatherup Center, the Sun Devils' practice facility.
