Ironwood Ridge tennis coach Ryan Bais is happy with the way his boys are playing, but he's hoping the best is yet to come.

The Nighthawks entered Friday's Division II singles and doubles state tournaments with the top seeds on both sides and didn't disappoint.

Top-seeded singles player Alex Bose and the No. 1 doubles team of Cody Petford and Adam Knox each had a first-round bye before cruising to easy wins in the second round.

Sixth-seeded singles player Ryan Knox won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then 6-2, 6-1 in the second to also move on and give I-Ridge a perfect outing.

Bais said the matches were all tough, even though the scores may not have reflected that. He's hoping the day gave his team, which is the defending team champion, a warm-up for today's third round.

"I'm not sure we've seen their best yet," Bais said about his players. "Hopefully the best has not happened yet and we're saving it for the end."

I-Ridge also had success in girls action. Top-seeded singles player Sara Brown shut her opponents out in both the first and second rounds, while the second-seeded doubles team of Marissa Baca and Kelsey Brown won 6-0, 6-1 after a bye.

Catalina Foothills had similar success, sending a combined seven players to the third round.

In girls doubles, the No. 1 duo of Rachana and Kirtana Bhat, the defending state champions, won 6-0, 6-1 to stay in line to repeat.

Freshman Katie Watson, the No. 7 seed in girls singles, shut out back-to-back opponents to move to the third round.

On the boys side, second-seeded singles player Mike Lee won 6-0, 6-0 after a first-round bye while fourth-ranked Nate Rasmusen won 6-2, 6-0 in his only match of the day.

Foothills teammates Andrew Good and Quinn Gardner won 6-0, 6-2 as the No. 3 doubles seed.

The Division II boys singles tournament has six players left in the round of 16, with Nogales' Francisco Ton and Canyon del Oro's Josh Henkle joining the two pairs from I-Ridge and Foothills.

In other girls action, the fourth-seeded doubles team of Janine and Jeunne Fernando from Sabino moved to the third round, while senior teammate Susanna Studwell won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then 6-1, 6-1 in the second. She is the No. 7 seed.

Nogales' Cristina Oropeza, the No. 3 seed in girls singles, also moved to the third round for the second straight year with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the second round after she won 6-0, 6-0 in the first.

Division I

Salpointe Catholic advanced eight players to the second round of Division I action.

Top-seeded sophomore Caroline Amos won 6-0, 6-0 in girls singles. Andrew Dunn and Tyler Linscott, the No. 1 doubles team, rolled 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Yash Parikh, the No. 4 seed in boys singles, also won 6-0, 6-0, and teammates Brandon Gerber and Jack Amos advanced to the third round.

The fourth-seeded duo of Maeve McGeorge and Nicole Whinery won twice to advance.

Division III

St. Gregory's David Strong, Santa Rita's Richie Foitik and Pusch Ridge Christian's Evan Gazic all advanced to the third round in boys singles.

On the girls side, Pusch Ridge's top-ranked doubles team of Allie Scott and Gabrielle Courtney advanced, while Desert Christian's Courtenay Gleason, the No. 3 seed in singles, also moved on.
