High School Tennis: No. 2 Foothills boys chase eighth title in 9 years

Second-seeded Catalina Foothills will begin a quest for its eighth title in nine years when it opens the Division II boys team state tournament today.

The Falcons (13-1) host No. 15 Gilbert Williams Field at 3 p.m., and they're not alone. Seven local teams are hosting first-round matches.

Foothills is undefeated at home and perfect against Division II opponents. Its lone blemish was a 5-4 loss to Salpointe Catholic, Tucson's only team to make the playoffs in Division I.

Here's a look at the other 10 local teams opening up the state tournament today. All matches start at 3 p.m.:

Division I

No. 3 SALPOINTE CATHOLIC

• Record: 11-1

• First-round opponent: No. 14 Laveen Cesar Chavez.

• Season in review: The Lancers' only loss came against Phoenix Brophy over a month ago. Salpointe has since won 10 of its last 11 matches by scores of 9-0.

No. 12 RINCON/UNIVERSITY

• Record: 11-3

• First-round opponent: at No. 5 Tempe Corona del Sol.

• Season in review: The Rangers have won back-to-back matches, dropping only one match within. Rincon lost to Salpointe twice and Ironwood Ridge once. 

Division II

No. 3 IRONWOOD RIDGE

• Record: 12-2

• First-round opponent: No. 14 Sabino.

• Season in review: The defending state champion Nighthawks won 14 consecutive matches in between a pair of losses to Catalina Foothills.

No. 5 NOGALES

• Record: 14-1

• First-round opponent: No. 12 Phoenix Greenway.

• Season in review: The Apaches lone blemish came at the hands of Catalina Foothills 9-0 in early March. Nogales has since won 11 straight.

No. 13 CANYON DEL ORO

• Record: 9-4

• First-round opponent: at No. 4 Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain.

• Season in review: Foothills and I-Ridge combined to hand CDO all four of its defeats. Other than that, the Dorados never dropped more than two individual matches in a match.

No. 14 SABINO

• Record: 7-6

• First-round opponent: at No. 3 Ironwood Ridge.

• Season in review: After losing five of their first six matches, the Sabercats won six of their final seven matches to make the postseason.

Division III

No. 3 PUSCH RIDGE CHRISTIAN

• Record: 12-2

• First-round opponent: No. 14 Desert Christian.

• Season in review: Both of the Lions' losses came against last year's Division II champion, Ironwood Ridge. Pusch Ridge, last year's state runner-up, went undefeated against other Division III teams this year.

No. 6 ST. GREGORY

• Record: 11-2

• First-round opponent: No. 11 Sedona Red Rock.

• Season in review: Outside of the two losses the Hawks suffered to Pusch Ridge, St. Gregory lost just one individual match in 11 matches.

No. 8 DOUGLAS

• Record: 13-1

• First-round opponent: No. 9 Morenci.

• Season in review: The Bulldogs haven't lost more than one individual match in a match since suffering their only defeat, 6-3 against Nogales, a week into the season.

No. 14 DESERT CHRISTIAN

• Record: 11-5

• First-round opponent: at No. 3 Pusch Ridge Christian.

• Season in review: The Knights have won five of their last six matches and are 5-4 on the road this year. They lost twice to Pusch Ridge.
