The Pusch Ridge Christian girls tennis team hopes to get a shot at revenge today.

The Lions beat Fountain Hills 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2A-3A state tennis tournament Friday at Glendale Paseo Tennis Center.

Pusch Ridge will play Miami in one semifinal, while Safford takes on Phoenix Country Day in the other.

Both semifinal matches start at 11 a.m., followed by the championship at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Phoenix Country Day knocked out Pusch Ridge from the 2A-3A tournament last year in the semifinals. Both teams are unbeaten this season.

Pusch Ridge won state titles in 2007 and 2008 before Phoenix Country Day stopped its quest for a three-peat last year.

The Lions beat Miami 8-1 earlier this year.

"It would be nice to get back to the finals, but Miami is always tough," said Pusch Ridge coach David Towne.

Tanya Hetlinger won 6-0, 6-1 Friday at No. 1 singles for Pusch Ridge, while Sami Towne won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

"We were just more consistent than Fountain Hills," David Towne said.

Safford advanced with a 5-0 win over Wellton Antelope. Miami topped Phoenix Christian 5-1 and Phoenix Country Day defeated Benson 5-0.

Desert Christian and Safford advanced to the 2A-3A semifinals with wins Friday at the Paseo Tennis Center.

Desert Christian will meet Sedona Red Rock, while Safford will play Phoenix Country Day. Both matches start at 1:30 p.m., with the championship to follow at about 3:30 p.m.

Desert Christian beat Fountain Hills 5-1 Friday, while Safford topped Goodyear Estrella Foothills 5-1.

The Pusch Ridge boys lost 5-0 to Phoenix Country Day, while Sedona Red Rock topped Thatcher 5-3.

"We played really well, but the Phoenix Country Day boys were just a level above us," David Towne said.
