Salpointe Catholic, the top-seeded boys volleyball team in the 5A state tournament, started its quest for a state title with a 3-0 victory over Tucson High in the first round Monday night.

The host Lancers won 25-16, 25-11, 25-16.

Ben Malisewski paced the Lancers with 18 assists, six digs and four aces. Dan Smith also had a stellar outing with team-highs in kills (eight) and blocks (four).

Torrence Wade paced the Badgers with 10 kills. Rene Aquirre-Garcia had 15 assists.

Salpointe will host No. 8 Phoenix Mountain Pointe in the second round on Wednesday. Mountain Pointe beat No. 9 Ironwood Ridge 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-18).

The Lancers were the only local 5A team to win Monday night.

Rincon/University, the 14th seed, lost to Phoenix Brophy, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14.

Rueben Bautista had 15 assists and Michael Bernal had nine digs for the Rangers in the loss.

Mountain View, the No. 11 seed, lost in straight sets to sixth-seeded Gilbert.

In the 2A-4A tournament, No. 5 Sahuaro, the highest-seeded Southern Arizona team in action, rolled over Tempe McClintock in straight sets.

The Cougars won 25-13, 25-22, 25-16.

Eric Stark had a team-high eight aces for Sahuaro.

"He was on a roll with his jump serve tonight," Cougars coach Sandy Novak said. "He's improving every game."

Stark also had a team-high seven kills. Dallis Shingler added 31 assists in the win.

Sahuaro travels to play No. 4 Gilbert Higley on Wednesday in the second round.

In an all-Southern Arizona matchup, No. 9-seeded Cholla beat No. 8 Marana in three sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16.

Luigi Hodgers had 34 assists in the win to go with six digs and three aces. Anthony Gabaldon had 18 kills.

"Cholla played us very tough," Marana coach Alex Ruff said. "They played well on offense, and we didn't get it done defensively."

Cholla will travel to face No. 1 seed Catalina Foothills on Wednesday. Foothills, Catalina, Gilbert Williams Field and Higley all had first-round byes Monday.

Catalina will host No. 7 Chandler Seton Catholic on Wednesday. Seton beat No. 10 Cienega 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 25-21).

No.. 11 Scottsdale Notre Dame beat No. 6 Sabino 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-21).
