Golfers in the 1A/2A Central Region tournament saw Monday just how unforgiving The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain can be.

It was a day where countless tee shots found their way into the desert, approach shots filtered off of the steep greens at will, and double-digit scores were more common than those under par.

After all the scores were in, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy walked away with the Central Region team title with a score of 376 in front of Yuma Catholic (378), Wellton Antelope (381) and San Manuel (440).

The tough course got the better of Central Region champion Fred Blohm on the 15th hole, a 343-yard par 4.

Blohm sent both his tee and provisional shots into the desert. The Wellton Antelope senior had to take an unplayable lie on his provisional shot so he was lying at 4 in the desert about 60 yards from the green.

He skulled that shot across the green into a cactus behind the green. Blohm, a right-handed golfer, had to turn his club face around and swing lefty to get it onto the green.

Blohm's seventh shot, a 15-foot putt, lipped out, and he finally tapped in for an 8.

"I let my drive leak into the desert, and then from there it just kind of snowballed on me," said Blohm, who managed to card a 78 for the region title. "But you just have to forget about it and move on."

Blohm birdied two of the final three holes for a 2-over 38 on the back nine.

Here are two of the other standout performances on a tough day at the Ritz-Carlton:

Ian Patterson, Immaculate Heart Academy

Despite rolling countless putts right up to the lip of the cup, Patterson couldn't sink enough of them to break 80.

"It was rough out there," he said, after carding an 81, which was good for second place in the overall standings.

Patterson said he wasn't happy with his performance. He noted a three-putt on a would-be par on the ninth green as a shot he would have liked to have back.

The Pooley Twins, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy

The junior Pooley brothers both scored in the top 10 to help propel the Lions to their first-ever golf region title.

Grant posted a 96 (ninth place), and Geoff recorded a 93 (fourth place).

"You have your good days and your bad days," said Geoff.

"I didn't play terrible. I had a couple bad holes, but that's golf."
