While Natasha Winnik works at her desk at Originate Natural Building Materials Showroom, Skye, an an 8-year-old female shepherd mix, keeps an eye on the showroom. Skye goes to work every day with Winnik at the business, at 526 N. Ninth Ave.

It was an awfully hot day to be wearing a fur coat to work, but Friday was the 12th Annual Take Your Dog To Work Day.

That's a national promotion started in 1999 by Pet Sitters International to celebrate the canine-human bond and to raise awareness of the need for pet adoption.

Among Tucson businesses that planned to welcome their employees' pups to work Friday were SandManPromotions.com, 5425 E. Fairmount Place; Farmers Insurance, 4866 E. Broadway; and KXCI Community Radio, 220 S. Fourth Ave., according to a national spokeswoman for Take Your Dog To Work Day.

But it turns out dogs go to work just about every day at a number of local businesses, including Rochelle K at 7039 N. Oracle Road, Lori Leiber Graphic Design at 415 S. Meyer Ave. and Originate Natural Building Supplies at 526 N. Ninth Ave.

Skye, a shepherd mix, goes to the office every day with employee Natasha Winnik at Originate, to hang out in the showroom or greet customers at the door.

Skye was surprised Friday as the kickoff winner of a "Dog Days of Summer" promotion sponsored by Tucson's Spectrum Printing Company. Skye's prizes were a lunchbox filled with treats and a dessert cake from Paws & Claws Pet Boutique & Grooming Spa. The promotion continues through Aug. 11 with more weekly prizes.
