LA Fitness buys Bally's locations in Tucson, elsewhere

  • Updated

Bally Total Fitness will sell its two Tucson locations to LA Fitness in a deal that’s set to close Wednesday.

Fitness International LLC, an affiliate of LA Fitness International LLC, agreed to acquire the assets of 171 Bally Total Fitness clubs nationwide, the companies said in a news release.

Bally sold the assets for $153 million, said Larry Larsen, a spokesman for Bally Total Fitness.

In Tucson, Bally has locations at 2475 N. Swan Road, near East Grant Road, and 4690 N. Oracle Road, near Tucson Mall, according to its website.

Bally, which will have 100 locations remaining when the transaction is complete, is focusing on its key markets, such as New York, San Francisco, Houston and Denver. The sale leaves Bally debt free, Larsen said.

All Bally Total Fitness clubs in Arizona were included in the sale, Larsen said.

The sale shouldn’t have a significant impact on those who exercise at the clubs, as their memberships will transfer from Bally to LA Fitness.

“We’ve made preparations for a smooth transition for our members,” Larsen said.

Larsen couldn’t say with certainty how the sale will affect employees, because the clubs will be run by LA Fitness starting Thursday. But he did say it’s going to take the workers who are already there to keep the clubs up and running smoothly.

LA Fitness did not respond to messages left asking for information about the acquisition.
