Tucson-based Solon Corp. has contracted with the Tanque Verde Unified School District to build more than a megawatt of photovoltaic systems on four school campuses, the company said today.
The total system capacity for the TVUSD project, 1.15 megawatts, will be spread across the campuses of Tanque Verde High School and Elementary School, Emily Gray Junior High School and Agua Caliente Elementary School.
The systems will be a combination of shade structures and rooftop systems, and their output will offset a large portion of the daytime energy needs of each campus, Solon said.
Solon will design, build and operate the systems and provide the power they produce to TVUSD through a 25-year power purchase agreement. TVUSD will be responsible only for purchasing the solar electricity that the systems produce, allowing the district to save money on its utility bills with no upfront costs.
The project is subsidized by rebates provided by Tucson Electric Power Co., under a renewable-energy program funded by ratepayer surcharges.
