It's not easy to be a fashionista these days.

Times are tough; money is tight. That's where Frugalista comes in handy.

The east-side store - which features an eclectic mix of women's fashions and accessories - sells high-end names at bargain-basement prices. Clothing is under $40, while purses are $50 or less. As further evidence of the deals to be had, the original price tags are still attached to many things.

A green ruffled tank by Aqua, the in-house line at Bloomingdale's, still carries the original $68 Bloomies price tag. Frugalista marked the top $19.

Manager Rachel Stoddard said the store receives monthly shipments of brand-name closeouts.

"We try to be as on-season as possible," she said.

The locally owned store, which opened in January, has the look of a small but chic boutique. A black chandelier hangs from the ceiling; the entryway has huge, glossy tiles and trendily outfitted mannequins. Signs highlight which clothing labels occupy the racks - Lucky Brand, La Rok, Citizens of Humanity and Free People, for starters. Sizes range from juniors to plus sizes.

"We want to attract everyone," Stoddard said.

On this day, Frugalista is stocked with a mix of casual and fancier pieces, even a few party dresses. Stacked on a shelf are wide-leg Lucky Brand trouser jeans, $39 instead of $140. A long-sleeved, cotton, leopard-print top, also by Lucky, is $17 instead of $49.50. A pumpkin-colored, silk LaRok tunic dress, with a low V-neckline, beading and embroidery, is $39. The original price tag dangling from the dress reads $328.

The emphasis here is on clothing and accessories like jewelry and handbags. A basket full of sunglasses includes a pair of $10 Oscar de la Renta shades. Purses include popular brands like Big Buddha, Chinese Laundry and Unlisted.

Frugalista keeps a Facebook page where it posts pictures of new arrivals and alerts people to sales. If you thought the regular prices were good, Stoddard says sale items get knocked down to $3, $5 and $10.
