Yesennia Gonzalez, 28, was arrested on suspicion of DUI Dec. 10, after she kicked a sheriff's sergeant in the eye with her boot, officials said.
Gonzalez was detained in the area of East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way, and after deputies placed her in handcuffs and were trying to put her in a patrol car, she began kicking at them.
During the struggle, Gonzalez kicked Sgt. Mark Bustamante in the left eye with the heel of her boot, according to a department news release.
Bustamante was taken to a hospital and doctors operated on his eye, but couldn't save it.
Gonzalez was booked into the Pima County jail on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of DUI.
