Silas Vollmer, 4, finds another use for a shoestring that is supposed to be used to make a necklace during Nuts About Nature Preschool Hour at Agua Caliente Park, 12325 E. Roger Rd. The theme of the week was the various shapes that naturally occur in nature such as circles, spirals, triangles, rectangles, pentagon and so forth. The hour-long program, which is offered the first and third Wednesday of each month, has a curriculum designed for children three to five years old although siblings are also welcome, said educator Julie Strom. The program combines school-ready skills with nature and exploration, she said. Each session also has a different theme, Strom said. It includes the making of crafts, a science activity and reading, Strom said. The program is free and offered by the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation department. Hayden Poeling, five months old, grimmaces at the taste of medications from her mom, Kimberly Poeling, as they begin their first round of medications for the day at their home in Tucson, AZ. The scar on her head is from the surgery done in early August. . The medications consist of anti-siezure meds, pain meds, antacid and antibiotics. Doctors disconnected the left hemisphere of Hayden's brain from the right due to unremitting seizures. Holly Olszewski, prosthetist with Hanger, fits Sandra Yessenia Argæ∫elles Zazueta with her new hands as interpreter Veronica Gallegos looks on. Argæ∫elles, 20, lost her legs below the knees and part of her hands to an infection. Thanks to Arsobo, an organization that brings people together from both sides of the border, she now has prosthetic hands and legs. The group holds a prosthetic clinic in Nogales almost every month and has helped hundreds of low-income Mexican patients in is first year.

University of Arizona freshman Kylie Alcaraz, 18, twirls an egg that is inside a condom that was part of an egg toss game while on the UA Mall. Students from William Simmons' Sex, Health and AIDS course, were taking part in Sex Talk Week 2014 on the UA Mall. Some students got photographed with a six-foot tall condom, played sex trivia games, had a condom toss, created art pieces using condoms and the student had other sex-related games during a sort of Condom Olympics. The idea is to get his students accustomed to talking about sex and all it entails, Simmons said. The Pima County Health Department's mobile testing truck was also present providing free screening for sexually transmitted diseases. They tested for syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia, said family planning case manager Stephanie Smith. For students that test positive the county is offering referrals to a clinic, Smith said. The hands and arms of the members of the Tucson Synchro synchronized swim team rise out of the water during the inaugural Aqua Youth Showcase at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center at 23 W. Calle Concordia. The event was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oro Valley. More than $2,300 was raised to sponsor aquatic scholarships for underprivileged and homeless youths from the northwest side during the summer of 2014. The event was also meant to encourage fitness and wellness through aquatic activities. Additional funds were raised from a raffle offering four cash prizes. The swim team, which started in 1972, demonstrated various routines for the attendees. It is the oldest continuous year-round competitive synchronized swim team in Tucson with 34 girls usually between the ages of seven and 18 participating. Firefighters work to clear debris during a fire in a quanset hut workshop at 5460 N. Camino de la Tierra on Thursday, May 8, 2014 in Marana, AZ. The 20 x 40 foot shop was fully involved a tree tops were burning when Northwest Fire crews arrived prompting a second alarm. That alarm was cancelled once the fire was subdued and the surrounding structures were out of danger. The shop contained automotive parts and propane and acetylene tanks. There were no injuries.
