Food drive today to benefit food bank

A local student is hosting a food drive today to support the Tucson Community Food Bank.

Xavier Jackson will hold the food drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot at Gridley Middle School, 350 S. Harrison Road.

The food drive is a part of Jackson's school expo project.

Items that are needed most are canned meat, vegetables, soup, fruit, tomato products, cereal, peanut butter and meal mixes such as Hamburger Helper or Rice-A-Roni.

Southwest Side

Shot clinics for kids next two Saturdays

Two free immunization clinics are scheduled the next two Saturdays for children 4 to 18.

Clinics will be held:

• Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs Roy Drachman Clubhouse, 5901 S. Santa Clara Ave.

• Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pascua Yaqui Wellness Center, 5305 W. Calle Torim.

A parent or legal guardian must be present. Remember to bring children's shot records.

The clinics are being put on by El Rio Community Health Center and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson, Tucson Medical Center, Sol Casinos and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.

In addition to free shos, Tucson Medical Center and Kohl's Cares for Kids will offer free booster seats for children who weigh more than 40 pounds and are 5 or older. Children must be present to receive the booster seat.

El Rio's dental department will also offer screenings for children.


Class will train 'Master Recyclers'

Tucson Clean & Beautiful will host a "Master Recycler" training class to provide information on recycling, reusing and reducing waste.

The class will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council, 4300 E. Broadway. Each class participant will receive a packet of reference information, including a Reduce-Reuse-Recycle directory for Tucson and Pima County.

Once the class is completed, new Master Recyclers will be asked to be a contact for their neighborhood, workplace or community organization.
