A new health-care facility dedicated to providing care to patients struggling with dementia is in the works for midtown Tucson.
Tucson Medical Center is developing the center in a partnership with Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging with cash from a $3 million grant.
Handmaker, which provides nursing care for seniors, is raising another $1.5 million to build it.
The grant is from the Paul and Lydia Kalmanovitz Foundation of San Francisco.
The facility will include a 20-bed unit dedicated to dementia, Alzheimer’s and geriatric psychiatric care. The other 20 beds will be operated by Handmaker with a focus on skilled nursing for long-term patients.
The new center will be at the Handmaker campus at 2221 N. Rosemont Blvd..

It’s not yet clear when construction will begin on the facility, still in the planning stages, said Art Martin, Handmaker’s CEO.
