Marlene Calhoun, holding bell, and Dick Wadsworth, center, with neighbors.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Marlene Calhoun and Dick Wadsworth.

Nominated by: Ann Tracy-Lopez.

Why: For being great neighbors. The two give rides and pick up groceries for disabled neighbors; they take neighbors to their doctor’s appointments. They also pet sit and take out the garbage for neighbors who aren’t physically able to do so. They host block parties and always welcome new neighbors. The couple invites over neighbors who to do not have plans for the holidays. They’ve opened their home to neighbors who were burned out of their house. They are always attending graduations, hosting baby showers and watching the homes of winter visitors when they are gone, Tracy-Lopez wrote in her nomination letter. “They do so much for everyone on the street and make it a wonderful place to live,” she wrote.
